Nickelodeon Promotes Violent & Sexual Games to Young Children
Thursday January 28, 2010
Nickelodeon can’t seem to make up their mind. Are they educational and child friendly? Are they edgy and cool? My kids enjoy several Nick Jr shows and have spent time on the Nick Jr website. The games and crafts on the site are cute, focusing on such popular preschool characters as Dora and The Wonder Pets. But if you scroll to the bottom of the screen under the title “Nickeloden Kids and Family Websites” you’ll find links to AddictingGames.com, a decided child-unfriendly website. Links to the site are even more prominent on Nickelodeon sites geared towards elementary-aged kids and tweens.
AddictingGames.com is a free game website where users can actually upload their own games, rate favorites and embed games on their social media pages. The games that are highlighted on the front page change regularly based on what’s new and what’s popular. Today I was greeted with such gems as ZOMGies (“Shoot Zombies in your Pajamas!”), Kitten Cannon (“Launch the kitten into a field filled with bombs!”) and Bowman 2 (“Shoot an arrow through the heart of your opponent.”). Clearly these are not games intended for children, so why are there prominent links to the site on all of the Nickelodeon properties?
The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) is asking the same thing. In fact, they’ve put together a letter campaign to request that Nickelodeon Kids and Family Group stop promoting the highly violent and sexualized website to young children. Concerned child advocates can quickly send a message just by adding their name and contact info to an online form.
In the meantime, I suggest that parents protect their children by being proactive. Installing a browser for kids will keep your child from visiting unapproved and/or unsafe websites. No matter how much you trust your children, it is just too easy to click on a link that looks like fun, but ends up being inappropriate.

10 tips to boost your immunity and stay healthy this flu season:
1. Optimize your vitamin D levels. Optimizing your vitamin D levels is one of the absolute best strategies for avoiding infections of ALL kinds, and vitamin D deficiency is likely the TRUE culprit behind the seasonality of the flu due to decreased exposure to sunlight. Melaleuca’s Vitality Packs contain 600 IU’s of natural Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and the children’s Koala Pals Vitamins contain 400 IU’s which is the RDA amounts recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. (Avoid supplements with vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) which is an inferior synthetic form not used effectively by the body
2. Take probiotics. Did you know 80% of your immune system resides in your digestive track? Most people do not get enough good bacteria into their system and have an overabundance of the bad bacteria due to antibiotics, stress and illness. Good probiotic supplements will contain two strains – Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis. Melaleuca’s probiotic, Florify, contains 5 billion colonies of good flora with both of these strains. Probiotics support your immune system, aid in digestion, enhance metabolism and breakdown of toxins, promote vitamin/mineral absorption, prevent yeast infections, help w/ IBS symptoms and maintain healthy bowel transit times.
3. Give your immune system a boost.
At the first sign of the cold or flu, or when you know you have been exposed, boost your immune system with echinacea, vitamin C and zinc. These natural nutrients help boost your body’s natural defenses by supporting your immune system. Echinacea has been clinically shown to support white blood cell function by increasing the ability of white blood cells to destroy invading microorganisms and boosting the strength of T-lymphocytes, which are vital to the immune system. Additionally, a compound in Echinacea, known as echinacein, helps prevent germs from penetrating and destroying healthy cells. Vitamin C and zinc are also crucial for proper white blood cell function. Melaleuca’s Activate Immune Complex contains 900mg of echinacea, 100mg of vitamin C and 10mg of zinc along with folic acid and selenium to give your body its best chance at fighting off germs.
4. Disinfect your home. Germs, bacteria and viruses, including various strains of the flu virus, can live on surfaces for up to 48 hours. The flu virus lives longest on non-porous surfaces, such as plastic, metal or wood, Traditional disinfectants such as Lysol or products with bleach contain toxic chemicals. They are skin, lung and eye irritants, as indicated on their warning labels. Instead, use a natural disinfectant such as Melaleuca’s Sol-U-Guard Botanical. Sol-U-Guard Botanical is the first EPA approved disinfectant to combine thyme oil and citric acid to effectively kill 99.9% of household germs including staph, e-coli, salmonella, strep, rhinovirus, and influenza A.
5. Wash your hands. Washing your hands will decrease your likelihood of spreading a virus to your nose, mouth or other people. Wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Tell your kids to sing their ABC’s while they wash their hands. The flu virus can live on your hands for 1 hour. Carry hand sanitizer in your purse, briefcase or car for those times when you cannot use soap and water. Use a hand sanitizer that does not contain the chemcial triclosan, such as Melaleuca’s Clear Defense Hand Gel. Clear Defense kills 99.9% of all germs with naturally derived alcohol and T36-C5 Melaleuca oil with moisturizers to keep your hands from drying out. Clear Defense also comes in sanitizing biodegradable hand wipes which are a perfect way to keep your family protected while on the go.
6. Drink Plenty of Fluids. Drink at least eight 8oz glasses of water each day. Water is essential for your body to function properly. Drinking Melaleuca’s Herbal Tea with alternifolia leaf, ginseng and ginger can help “drown a cold”. Stay hydrated with Melaleuca’s Sustain Sport Drink Mix with 4 essential electrolytes (calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium). These minerals help rehydrate your cells for proper bodily functions. Sustain Sport has less sugar and twice as many electrolytes as Gatorade.
7. Use Tea Tree Oil. Tea tree oil comes from Melaleuca Alternifolia leaves found in Australia and has many healthful properties. It is a natural oil that is an anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-septic. If you are a Dr. Oz fan, tea tree oil is one of his recommended top 5 must haves for your medicine cabinet! Not all tea tree oils are the same because there are over 150 different species of Melaleuca trees. The only pure, medicinal tea tree oil must come from the oil of the Melaleuca Alternifolia and contain more than 35% Terpinen 4-ol and less than 10% Cineole to be effective. Melaleuca’s tea tree oil has all of these properties and is one of the purest, highest qualities you will ever find. It is great for cuts, scrapes, burns, insect bites, cold sores, canker sores, shingles, ear infections, and fungal infections. Place 10 drops in a cool mist humidifier with 2 capfuls of Sol-U-Mel and water to help with colds, coughs, and asthma.
8. Eat phytonutrient rich foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts) Foods like broccoli, leafy greens, garlic, tomatoes, grapes, strawberries, blueberries and whole grains contain phytonutrients. Phytonutrients, such as phytosterols, carotenoids, polyphenols, resveratrol and other flavenoids are essentially the plants immune system and can benefit your immune system as well. If you are not eating at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day, you may want to consider phytonutrient supplements. Melaleuca’s Phytomega offers 2000 mg of plant phytosterols combined with the proven benefits of 1000mg of omega 3 fatty acids (fish oil) and 30mg of CoQ10 in a daily dose. Phytomega will not only benefit your immune system, but also can reduce your risk of heart disease by naturally lowering your cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Melaleuca’s ProVexCV Grape Flavenoid Supplement combines natural grape seed extract, resveratrol, quercetin, green tea extract and bromelain to create a powerful antioxidant that promotes a healthy body and cardiovascular system.
9. Avoid sugary and processed foods. Sugar decreases the function of your immune system almost immediately, and as you likely know, a strong immune system is key to fighting off viruses and other illness. 6 tsp of sugar can decrease immune function by 25%, 10 tsp by 50%, and 24 tsp of sugar can decrease your immune system by 92%. Ever wonder why so many kids get sick right after Halloween each year? Melaleuca has a wide variety of organic, whole grain crackers, cereal and bars that offer a healthier snacking alternative.
10. Get adequate sleep. This is an indispensable requirement for a strong immune system. Another one of Dr. Oz’s recommended top 5 medicine cabinet essentials is Valerian Root. Valerian Root is an herb that acts as a sedative and can help with insomnia and anxiety. Melaleuca’s Rest EZ provides Valerian Root, Passion Flower and Hops to help with a restful sleep.

Reasons to consider “Going Green”:
1. Health
Numerous studies from Dr. Doris Rapp’s, OUR TOXIC WORLD, a tome of 500 scientific studies about harsh chemicals, and research by the Nobel Prize winning doctors, Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility, paint a clear picture of the harm involved not only to our health, but especially our most vulnerable citizens, children. To have the latter exposed to toxic elements when their hearts and lungs haven’t fully formed, reinforces most mom’s common sense. There is also a great body of research linking chemicals to cancer, allergies, learning disabilities and ADHD.
2. Toxic Build Up
The consistent use of products containing toxins builds up in our homes and our bodies, especially in Arizona where our windows are shut tight for so many months. Ever notice your eyes tearing up or your throat closing in the cleaning supply aisle of your local grocery store? Out-gassing is a serious issue that allows seepage through plastic bottles. That’s why there’s a strong smell even though the containers are tightly sealed. The cleaners we’re using are often more dangerous than what we’re trying to clean up.
3. Your Children
Kids follow you around wanting to help you clean. Precious darlings! Ever read the warning labels on the back of Clorox Wipes, Lysol or other popular products? Maybe reconsider using them to clean up around food or allowing them to touch skin.
Teach your children to re-cycle and be environmentally sensitive. There are a lot of important messages we give our kids. Many can only be learned from you. Teach them not all our resources are renewable. Set an example by choosing products that don’t contain harsh chemicals, such as ammonia, chlorine, lye and formaldehyde. A word about formaldehyde. Labeled as a possible carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) it is contained in hundreds of products under many different names. All these ingredients can be irritants that cause nausea, vomiting, burning in the eyes, ears, nose and throat and exacerbate allergies and asthma. Ever notice a rash on your child’s skin after you’ve changed their sheets or put them in fresh nightclothes? Some name-brand dryer sheets contain formaldehyde. Just make sure you’re doing what you can to reduce toxins in the home.

I just read a great quote…
The skill of writing is to create a context in which other people can think.
– Edwin Schlossberge
When I’m writing my own posts I hope it will give someone, somewhere, an ‘aha moment’ which is, in effect, making them think, I suppose.
We’ve all read some junk on the internet and I challenge anyone to honestly say they haven’t.
This quote meant something to me. I will attempt to write things that inspire people to think and when I read things, I will choose to look at the message beyond the words…thinking.
That’s it! I liked it and wanted to share it! Thank you and good night!
A big lesson of the summer was to never waste good emotions. When things get you down (like business and the summertime did for me) write it down, do a video, get your frustrations and feelings recorded somewhere. Then when solutions come to you, write those down too, or do a video. And share both! Many of your customers, clients, business partners are experiencing the same things but may be afraid to say it.
Summer is drawing to a close. The ‘lazy’ days will soon be memories. I’m sure you were busy, as I was, with kids home from school, summertime activities, and vacations whether traveling or having a staycation at home. Enjoying the time with family, but maybe frustrated that you weren’t able to put in the hours you wanted on your business. Or more frustrating, that you did and took time away from your families, but were left high and dry by, well, summertime and all the activities of your prospects, customers, clients, and partners.
I had experienced the frustrations myself and, looking for excuses wanted to stand in the rain and forget about business. Why bother?!? No one was available. I could hardly find a person at home this summer for an appointment. So I’d decided to stand in the rain, forget business, it’s too hard, no one is interested, maybe I’ve found all the people I’m going to find, maybe it’s just not for me, blow it off.
And then the words of a dear friend and coach came to me. ‘Weather the storm’! I realized summer will be over, school will be back in session and people will be back to the usual grind.
That was the rainbow at the end of my frustrations. I came in from the rain, weathered the storm, and am soaking up the rainbow and sun. I took the time to focus on my family, play games, have cookouts, read, and spent little time on my business. Now the sun is out and it’s time to get back to work, growing my business and helping the courageous who weathered the storm with me!
Weather the storm, record it, and when the sun starts to shine again, record that too, and share it all! This is how we become great as mompreneurs, living it, loving it, sharing it!
Have a great week!

As I read and think about Kate and her family, I’m moved to think of my own children, balance, life, love, and joy. May we all come together in hope and prayer for Kate and her family in their hour of need. Through their trials may we recognize within our own families the assets, hopes, dreams, and inspirations that are our children.
I believe Kate may already be in surgery this morning, please pray for her Doctors as they work on her.
And please forward this to everyone you know!
If you haven’t heard about her yet, please watch the video and read about beautiful Kate.
Keep updated on Kate here.
